Good design is a collaborative process between client and designer. Whilst every project is different we have outlined some basic developmental stages which will help you to understand the process of design and have ownership of the outcomes.
research
Research often forms an integral part of design development, and sometimes is a prefacing stage, defining where new product opportunities exist and strengths of an existing approach need to be maintained.
conceptualisation
Concept development is the core skill of industrial design. Development, refinement and evaluation of the design issues and opportunities presented by the project and recommendation, refinement and proving of an optimum solution balancing the often conflicting requirements of cost, performance and manufacturing.
This is an exciting process and one we endeavour to engage our clients in, to ensure they are fully conversant with the ideas and opportunities presented by their product.
It is often at this point that valuable Intellectual property (IP) inherent in the design concept can be best identified and protected by patenting or design registration. Many of the projects undertaken by neo industrial design have developed IP the subject of Australian and international patents owned by our clients.
prototyping
Physical evaluation is an essential aspect of development for many products, how a surface feels or a mechanism responds and many other aspects of user interaction and ergonomics can often only be fully optimised by physical testing. Whether prototype construction requires 3D printing, machining, rapid prototyping or fabrication our prototyping workshop allows us to maintain full oversight of every aspect of your designs development.
Prototypes and models also often form useful tools for market evaluation and presentation – independent of their role in actual design development.
documentation
The resolved design concept will require 2D and 3D CAD documentation for production, specifying form, materials, finishes and assembly and process detail.
We can also provide animation and illustrations for presentation.
production
Through our workshop facilities we produce one off exhibitions and museum sets, patterns for tooling and small production runs of product for medical trials, field testing or market evaluation.
We can also provide the expertise to outsource and manage mass production for your product.
